Our Faithful Friend at Speak Teens Summer Camp
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Lucky, Valbonella's beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, who passed away this summer. For years, Lucky was an essential part of our Speak Teens Summer Camp at Valbonella, nestled in the beautiful hills of Emilia-Romagna. His calm presence, warm eyes, and wagging tail became a familiar and comforting sight to staff and students alike.
Lucky wasn’t just a camp dog — he was a true companion, a gentle guardian, and a silent teacher. Every summer, without fail, he welcomed each new group of Teens and Anglos with friendly enthusiasm. Whether lying in the sun during One-to-Ones or strolling beside groups on their way to lessons, Lucky had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel at ease. For many students who were nervous about speaking English or being away from home, Lucky was a grounding presence — a soft-furred reminder that everything would be okay.
He never missed a moment. From morning break-outs to evening activities, Lucky was always nearby. He would patiently sit through games, keep company during activities, and somehow always know when he was needed. His love for cuddles and attention made him a favorite among students and staff, and he often appeared in photos, right at the heart of the group.
So many of our Speak Teens alumni will remember Lucky as part of their linguistic and emotional journey — a quiet cheerleader who gave confidence to shy students, comforted the homesick, and added joy to every summer memory.
We will all miss the soft shuffle of his paws, the way he’d tilt his head when he "listened" to lessons, and the peaceful way he brought people together without saying a word. His loyalty, gentleness, and warmth were a reflection of everything we try to cultivate at camp: community, connection, and kindness.
Thank you, Lucky, for being part of our story. You’ve left pawprints on all our hearts.
