Ventitre giorni intensi che le hanno permesso di mettersi alla prova e di crescere a contatto con quello che ama di più: le lingue straniere e i progetti interculturali. Ecco le impressioni di Madalina, membro dello staff Speak Teens, sull'esperienza a Valbonella dell'estate appena conclusa.
Hi everyone! My name is Madalina.
This summer I had the opportunity to work with the Speak Teens team at Valbonella. English and multiculturalism have from an early age been some of my greatest passions. So, the idea of coming into contact with Speak and experiencing the world of language immersion, together with young people from all over the world, was an opportunity too good to be missed!

Quest’estate ho avuto l’opportunità di lavorare insieme al team di Speak. L’inglese e la multiculturalità sono state alcune delle mie passioni fin da piccola, quindi, l’idea di entrare a contatto con Speak e sperimentare il mondo dell’immersione linguistica insieme a ragazzi provenienti da tutto il mondo mi stimolava molto.
From my perspective, living alongside people from different cultures is essential to developing one’s personality, determination, and an open mind, ready and willing to welcome such diversity. Speak Teens Summer Camp gave me exactly these opportunities: incredible new experiences while putting myself to the test!
Dal mio punto di vista, vivere a contatto con persone appartenenti a culture diverse è fondamentale per sviluppare personalità, grinta, ed una mente aperta e pronta ad accogliere le diversità. Speak Teens Summer Camp mi ha dato proprio queste opportunità: vivere nuove esperienze e mettere alla prova me stessa!
So, this summer, at the beautiful Valbonella, around 100 brave Teens came together to make the first Speak summer camp. Our Teen Learners and Anglos put their skills to the test, shared their passions, emotions, joys and, sometimes, insecurities, making the Camp a place full of life and daily adventures. A team of staff from England, Scotland, South Africa, America and Italy worked hard to ensure that our participants had a Camp to remember. Having a team of mother-tongue and bilingual staff is, in my opinion, a real plus for enabling better communication with the Teens.
Quest’estate, nella bellissima Valbonella, circa 100 coraggiosissimi ragazzi hanno dato vita al primo campo estivo Speak. I nostri Anglos e Teens hanno messo alla prova le loro capacità, hanno condiviso con noi le loro passioni, emozioni, gioie, ma anche insicurezze rendendo il campo un posto pieno di vita e avventure giornaliere. Un team composto da ragazzi e ragazze provenienti dalla Scozia, Inghilterra, America o Italia ha lavorato duramente per garantire ai nostri partecipanti un Camp impossibile da dimenticare. Disporre di uno staff madrelingua o bilingue è, secondo me, una marcia in più per poter meglio comunicare con i ragazzi.
The task of us staff was that of making the experience unique and unforgettable for each and every Teen. Doing this required a lot of organization, attention to the needs of every Teen and, most of all, great teamwork.
Il compito dello Staff è stato proprio quello di rendere l’esperienza di ognuno di questi ragazzi unica ed indimenticabile. Per fare ciò è richiesta tantissima organizzazione, attenzione ad ogni esigenza, e per finire un grandissimo lavoro di squadra.
You certainly need a lot of energy and passion! From breakfast, until late into the evening, the Speak Teens team had the task of organizing and assisting Teen activities down to every last detail, often leaving, however, free reign to their imagination and creativity. The most exciting (and demanding) thing about all of this for the Teens is that it was done entirely in English! As well as being a unique educational opportunity for them, it was also an incredibly enriching experience for us staff and one that will help us all grow in our future careers.
La passione di certo non manca! Sin dalla prima colazione, fino a tarda sera, il team di Speak ha avuto il compito di organizzare e assistere le attività dei nostri ragazzi in tutto e per tutto, lasciando però, libero spazio alla loro fantasia e alle loro proposte. La cosa più stimolante ma anche più impegnativa di ciò è stato svolgere tutto questo in lingua inglese. Oltre che un’opportunità unica e formativa per i ragazzi, la mia esperienza lavorativa in lingua inglese la considero una marcia in più per me stessa e per il mio futuro.
I had the opportunity, together with the Teens and the other members of staff, to come into contact with people who, through the sharing of their passion and cultures, made for a summer camp experience without equal. My main role consisted of coordinating between the Speak Teens Office and Teens. One of my roles was, for example, translating important information and instructions for Teen learners in order to make everything comprehensible for both Learners and Anglos! We also got out and about: I guided Teens, along with the other members of staff, on excursions and during “Night Walks” through the beautiful woodland surrounding Valbonella. Together with forest rangers and biologists we introduced the Teens to the rich biodiversity of the territory, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Ho avuto l’opportunità, insieme ai ragazzi e agli altri membri dello staff, di entrare a contatto con persone le quali, condividendo con noi le loro passioni, hanno reso il Summer Camp un’esperienza senza paragoni. Il mio ruolo principale è stato quello di coordinare il lavoro tra l’ufficio di Speak Teens e i Teens stessi. Ad esempio, mi è stata data l’opportunità di tradurre per i ragazzi molte delle esperienze organizzate per loro durante il Camp, al fine di rendere tutto comprensibile per entrambi Anglos e Learners! Per esempio, li ho assistiti insieme agli altri membri del team di Speak durante camminate notturne per i boschi di Valbonella. Assieme ad alcuni ranger e biologi abbiamo fatto conoscere ai ragazzi la ricca biodiversità del territorio, patrimonio dell’umanità UNESCO.
A team of professional astronomers shared with us the secrets of the night sky and the stars during one wonderful evening of astronomy in the open air! To have the opportunity to work while learning something yourself is priceless; and doing everything in English made the Camp absolutely unique. I consider language immersion as an incredibly effective method, especially for Teens. English has today become a fundamental language for finding opportunities in the world of work, building a career, or even simply having the opportunity to have new experiences and enrich your personal culture.
Una squadra di astronomi professionisti, ha condiviso con noi i segreti del cielo e degli astri durante una meravigliosa serata di astronomia a cielo aperto! Avere l’opportunità di lavorare imparando, non ha prezzo; e fare tutto ciò in inglese è molto interessante per me. Considero l’immersione linguistica un progetto importante, soprattutto per gli adolescenti. Oggigiorno l’inglese è diventata una lingua fondamentale per orientarsi nel mondo del lavoro, per costruirsi una carriera, o anche semplicemente per avere l’opportunità di fare nuove esperienze e arricchire il proprio bagaglio culturale.
Thinking about what the Anglo Teens from different countries such as: Scotland, Ireland, Wales, the UK, Australia, Canada and America put into the Camp, it’s impossible not to feel very grateful to them for the enormous opportunity that they provided for our Learners. Their patience, devotion, but also sense of fun and generosity made Speak Teens one big family. On the other hand, we also greatly admired the Learners and their enormous desire to learn and their determination in rising to the challenge, despite their insecurities and fears at being exposed, sometimes for the first time, to real language. I always tried to put myself in the shoes of each of the Teens and enter into their world, trying to understand their needs and what they were thinking.
Pensando quindi al lavoro dei nostri Anglos durante il Camp, non posso che sentirmi molto grata dell’enorme opportunità che sono stati disposti a dare ai nostri Learners italiani. La loro pazienza, generosità ma anche leggerezza rendono Speak Teens una grande famiglia. D'altra parte non posso non ammirare i ragazzi italiani per l’enorme voglia di imparare, e per la loro grinta nello sfidare le loro insicurezze ed i loro timori, a volte per la prima volta affrontando una nuova lingua. Ho cercato sempre di immedesimarmi in ognuno dei ragazzi ed entrare nel loro mondo provando a comprendere i loro bisogni e quello che volevano trasmetterci.
Thanks to the experience of working with Speak, my passion for languages has increased even more, as has my desire to get to know different cultures and have new experiences in international contexts. I think back with enormous satisfaction to the summer experience, remembering the incredible moments spent with the Teens and the many activities we all did together. But, at the same time, all of us staff are focusing on the role we played with the Teens, trying to understand what we can improve, finding new ideas for 2019 in order to make the Speak Teens summer experience even more unique!
Grazie all’esperienza con Speak la mia passione verso le lingue accresce sempre di più, come d’altronde il mio desiderio di conoscere culture diverse e fare nuove esperienze soprattutto in campo internazionale. Ripenso con enorme soddisfazione all’esperienza estiva ricordando i bellissimi momenti passati con i ragazzi e alle numerose attività svolte insieme. Allo stesso tempo non posso non focalizzarmi anche sul lavoro svolto da noi componenti dello staff con i ragazzi, cercando di capire quello che potremmo migliorare, provando a trovare nuove idee per il 2019 al fine di rendere la loro esperienza estiva sempre più unica.
