Dopo aver partecipato al Summer Camp dello scorso luglio a Valbonella, Emily, ragazza scozzese sedicenne, ha voluto raccontare il suo rapporto con la propria lingua madre, quello che oggi l’inglese può offrire ai teenagers e come sono andati i suoi undici giorni in Italia.
"Ti piacerebbe tuffarti in una nuova cultura, comunicare nella lingua più parlata al mondo o acquisire un vantaggio prezioso per il raggiungimento dei tuoi obiettivi futuri? Se hai risposto di si ad almeno una di queste domande non c’è nulla che possa fermarti: imparare e conoscere l’inglese non solo ti porta a vivere esperienze uniche e conoscere persone straordinarie ma può regalarti molto, molto, di più.
Do you want to be able to immerse yourself in a new culture? Communicate in the most widely spoken language in the world? Or have an advantage in achieving your future goals? If so, then there’s nothing stopping you: learning English doesn’t just help you now, it helps you throughout your whole life, opening doors to amazing experiences and people. It can also give you much, much more.
Oltre cinquanta Paesi al mondo comunicano ufficialmente in inglese e in molti di più lo si utilizza come lingua franca. Questo significa che milioni di persone, di diversa cultura, provenienza e religione, ogni giorno, entrano in contatto con l’inglese. Oltre che comprendere meglio come si vive in determinati luoghi, la conoscenza di questa lingua vi darà modo, durante i vostri viaggi, di interagire con la gente del posto, spostarvi facilmente e aiutare altri turisti ad ottenere le informazioni che cercano. L’immersione in una lingua è un viaggio che può cominciare anche con piccoli gesti come leggere i grandi classici, guardare film e serie tv o ascoltare musica rigorosamente in lingua originale.
More than 50 countries in the world speak English as their official language and many more use it as a second language. This means that millions of people from various cultures and even religions come into contact with English every day. Other than being able to understand how certain countries work you will also, on your travels, be able to communicate with the locals, get around easily and help other tourists with talking and getting what they need. Immersing yourself in a language is itself a journey that can involve things like reading classic books, watching popular shows and listening to chart music in its original language.
Anche internet offre molte risorse dalle quali attingere: molti siti web prevedono una versione in inglese, così come canali social o portali di notizie online, tutti strumenti ricchi di contenuti e nuovi vocaboli da imparare. TV, radio e podcast, in particolare, possono aiutarti a comprendere i diversi accenti e ad abituarti alle diverse velocità delle comunicazioni. L’Università di Cambridge consiglia anche di scrivere un diario personale o un blog in inglese (o nella propria lingua madre per poi tradurlo).
The internet also offers many resources for picking up the language: many websites online are in English, a lot of social media, news and informational websites that contain a huge source of different and new vocabulary to learn. TV, radio and podcasts can particularly help you to understand different accents and different speeds of talking. Cambridge university recommends writing a diary or a blog in English (or in your native language and then translating it).
L'inglese ti offre le migliori opportunità di crescita anche perché molte università e datori di lavoro riconoscono gli studenti bilingue come i più abili nell’apprendimento di nuove competenze e informazioni, trasferibili a numerose professioni. In più aumentano le possibilità di ottenere un posto di lavoro affine ai tuoi desideri, sia a livello nazionale che internazionale, non a caso l’inglese è definita la lingua del mondo business.
English gives you some of the best opportunities in the world to grow, with many universities and employers recognizing bilingual students as those best equipped for learning new skills, competences and information, which are transferable to many professions. In addition, a knowledge of English increases the chances of landing your dream job - it is no coincidence that English is the language of the business world.
Lo scorso anno ho partecipato come Teen Anglo allo Speak Teens Summer Camp a Valbonella, in Italia. Ho pensato che fosse un gran bel modo di approcciarsi all’apprendimento di una lingua perché gli studenti hanno avuto modo di farlo divertendosi con coetanei di diverse culture provenienti da tutto il mondo, praticando sport e scoprendo la natura. Alla fine degli undici giorni sentivo che erano diventati molto più fiduciosi nelle loro comunicazioni in inglese ed è stato sempre più raro vedere lasciarsi sfuggire parole in italiano quando parlavano con i propri connazionali. Porterò per sempre con me questa esperienza e manterrò vive nel tempo tutte le amicizie nate nel Camp sia con gli altri Anglos che con i Learners (con cui tra l’altro parlo quasi tutti i giorni).
Last year I attended the Speak Teens Summer Camp at Valbonella in Italy as a Teen Anglo. I found that this was great way of grasping the language for the Learners whilst having fun with participants of the same age from different cultures around the world, playing sports and discovering the natural surroundings. I saw how by the end of the 11 days the Learners had become much more confident with their English conversation and only the odd word in Italian came out, whereas on the first day they were nervous to use English and spoke with the other Italians. This opportunity and experience will stay with me for life and I still talk to the friends I made almost every day, both the Learners and the other Anglos, and they’ve stayed friends even after the camp had finished."

Per l'estate 2019 sono previste due differenti esperienze: Speak Teens English Adventure, in Trentino e dedicato ai ragazzi dai 10 ai 14 anni e Speak Teens English Discovery, il Camp di Valbonella (Emilia-Romagna) della durata di 11 giorni dedicato invece a ragazzi dai 13 ai 17 anni.
