Every month, we want to provide you with the opportunity to discover new vocabulary or grammar and to see how it is used in real contexts.
This month, we are using the Ted Talk 10 ways to have a better conversation which features in the Watch & Listen section of this Speak for Yourself. In this talk, Celeste Headlee offers 10 tips on how to communicate better. We have lifted some key vocabulary from each one, to help you better understand her advice.
Key Vocabulary from Celeste Headlee’s 10 tips:
1. Don't multitaskDon’t multitask. Be present.
Non fare più cose nello stesso momento. Sii presente
To multitask (verb) – to do more than one task at the same time.
To multitask (verbo) - svolgere più di un'attività nello stesso momento.
To be present (adjective) – to be focused on what you are doing
Essere presente (aggettivo) - essere contentrato su ciò che stai facendo
2. Don't pontificate
Don’t pontificate.
Non pontificare.
To pontificate (verb) – to give your opinion about something as if only your opinion was correct.
Pontificare (verbo) - dare la tua opinione su qualcosa come se solo la tua fosse corretta.
3. Use open-ended questions
Take a cue from journalists.
Prendi spunto dai giornalisti.
Take a cue from (phrase) – follow the example of.
Prendere spunto da (espressione) - seguire l'esempio di...
4. Go with the flow
Go with the flow.
Segui la corrente.
Go with the flow (phrase) – be relaxed - don’t try to control or change the situation.
Seguire la corrente (espressione) - Rilassarsi - non provare a controllare o cambiare la situazione.
5. If you don't know, say that you don't know
People on the radio…are aware they’re going on the record ….Err on the side of caution.
La gente alla radio sa di uscire allo scoperto...mantenetevi prudenti.
Go on the record (phrase) – say something publically and officially.
Uscire allo scoperto (espressione) - dichiarare qualcosa pubblicamente e in modo ufficiale.
Err on the side of caution (phrase) – When there is a choice, take the safest option.
Mantenersi prudenti (espressione) - Quando c'è da fare una scelta, scegli l'opzione più sicura.
6. Don't equate your experience with theirs
People who brag about their IQ are losers.
Chi si vanta del proprio quoziente intellettivo è un perdente.
To brag (verb) – to speak too proudly about something.
Vantarsi (verbo) - Parlare troppo orgogliosamente di qualcosa.
7. Try not to repeat yourself
It’s condescending and it’s really boring and we tend to do it a lot.
È altezzoso e veramente noioso e tendiamo a farlo spesso.
Condescending (adjective) – behaving as if you are more intelligent or superior.
Altezzoso (aggettivo) - comportarti come se fossi più intelligente o superiore.
Tend (verb) – to be likely to do something.
Tendere (verbo) - essere in procinto di fare qualcosa.
8. Stay out of the weeds
Frankly, people don’t care about… all those details…
Francamente la gente non si preoccupa di...tutti quei dettagli...
Frankly (adverb) – This adverb is used before giving an honest or direct opinion.
Francamente (avverbio) - Avverbio utilizzato prima di fornire un'opinione onesta e diretta.
9. Listen
Buddha said, and I’m paraphrasing….
Buddha affermava, e sto parafrasando...
When I’m talking…. I can bolster my own identity.
Mentre parlo... Posso affermare la mia identità
To paraphrase (verb) – to repeat something written or spoken using different words.
Parafrasare (verbo) - ripetere qualcosa di scritto o dichiarato utilizzando parole diverse.
To bolster (verb) – to make something stronger.
Affermare (verbo) - fare qualcosa in modo più deciso.
10. Be Brief
All of this boils down to the same basic concept.
Tutto questo può essere ricondotto allo stesso concetto di base.
To boil down to (phrasal verb) – to be reduced to the essential facts.
Riconducibile a (phrasal verb) - essere ridotto al concetto essenziale.
