The camp
What is Speak Teens?
Speak Teens is a residential English language immersion summer camp in Italy for students aged 10 to 17. Students spend 8 days and 7 nights at Centro Turistico Valbonella, in the Foreste Casentinesi National Park in Emilia-Romagna, alongside native-speaker Teen Anglos from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada and Australia. The programme combines outdoor TEFL lessons, daily One-to-One sessions, group activities, sport, excursions and evening events — all in an environment designed to make English feel natural, not like a lesson.
What ages is the camp for?
Students aged 10 to 17. The Teen Anglos are aged 13 to 17. Groups are organised by age and level, so younger and older students have the right peers and the right lesson group throughout the week.
Who are the other students?
Speak Teens students come mainly from Italy and other European countries. They are teenagers who want to improve their communicative English and have a genuinely international camp experience — not just a language course. Many come back the following year.
What level of English is needed?
All levels are welcome. The programme focuses on speaking and listening in real situations rather than formal grammar, so less confident students find their feet quickly. Before camp, each student completes a short online Language Assessment — around 20–30 minutes, no preparation needed — so we can place them in the right lesson group from day one.
How does Speak Teens actually improve English?
By making English the language of daily life rather than something studied in a classroom. Students eat, play, hike and spend their evenings with native speakers. The One-to-One sessions, outdoor TEFL lessons and group activities reinforce one another. Most students and parents notice a real shift in confidence and spontaneity within the first couple of days — and the change tends to last after camp.
Is it better to go abroad to learn English?
Going abroad can be great, but many summer schools in English-speaking countries still follow a traditional classroom format with limited interaction with native speakers. At Speak Teens, students speak English from the moment they wake up to when they go to sleep — in a stunning Italian setting, with a 1:1 student-to-native-speaker ratio that most schools abroad cannot match.
How long has Speak Teens been running?
Since 2018. Speak Srl is based in Molfetta, Puglia, and has been running English language immersion programmes in Italy since it was founded. The camp takes place every year at the same location: Centro Turistico Valbonella.
The Teen Anglos
Who are the Teen Anglos?
The Teen Anglos are carefully selected native English-speaking teenagers aged 13 to 17, from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada and Australia. They are sociable, enthusiastic and genuinely motivated to make the week extraordinary for everyone.
What does the 1:1 ratio mean?
The 1:1 ratio means one native English speaker for every student — counting Teen Anglos and Speak staff together. On top of that, the Speak staff-to-student ratio is 1:6 for welfare and organisation.
Will my child have the same Anglo all week?
No — and that’s intentional. In the One-to-One sessions, the Anglo rotates each day, so every student hears a different accent and connects with a new personality. During activities and meals, students mix freely with the whole Anglos group. By the end of the week, most students have made genuine friendships with more than one of them.
What is a One-to-One session?
A dedicated daily session between one student and one Teen Anglo — just the two of them, no audience and no pressure. Sessions include conversation, games and storytelling rather than formal exercises. The Anglo changes each day.

What is included in the price?
Full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner in the camp restaurant), accommodation with linen and towels, the complete teaching and activities programme, welfare support and 24-hour staff supervision, and the online Language Assessment before camp. The optional Cambridge English Skills Test at the end of camp and the transfer service are priced separately.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes — through HeyLight you can spread the cost over 3–6 monthly interest-free instalments. See the HeyLight page for details.
Can my child attend both camps?
Absolutely — we’d love to have them for both weeks. We also offer a Multiple Booking discount for families booking more than one place. Contact us at teens@speakinitaly.com for details.
How can my child certify their progress?
Every student receives a Speak Teens participation certificate and a Record of Work at the end of camp. Students aged 12 and over can also sit the optional Cambridge English Skills Test on the final day.
Welfare & daily life
Can my child keep their phone?
Phones are kept in the camp office during the day and returned each evening from 6:45 to 7:45 pm — enough time to call home and catch up. A camp emergency phone is available to families 24 hours a day. Most students adapt very quickly and genuinely appreciate the freedom from screens.
Who supervises the students?
A full Speak team: the Summer Camp Director, the Learning Director, the Social Programme Coordinator, Welfare Coordinators (one female, one male, dedicated 24/7), qualified native-speaker TEFL teachers and Camp Leaders. Staff sleep in the same corridors as the students.
What are the rooms like, and what should my child bring?
Rooms sleep 4 to 6, with a private bathroom, divided by age and gender. Linen and towels provided. For clothing: practical light clothes, a warm layer for evenings, sturdy shoes for hiking, swimwear and sun cream. Musical instruments are welcome. Avoid valuables. A full packing list is sent after booking.
What about dietary requirements or medication?
Let us know at booking and we’ll coordinate with the venue. The kitchen can prepare alternatives for allergies and food intolerances. If your child takes regular medication, bring a sufficient supply for the duration and our team will manage it.
What happens if my child is unwell?
A first-aid-trained staff member is always on site. The venue has arrangements with local doctors and the nearest hospital is accessible. Families are contacted immediately. All students are covered by Speak’s public liability and accident insurance (Unipol Sai). Students travelling from abroad are encouraged to take out their own health and travel insurance.
Can my child bring money, and are valuables kept safe?
At check-in, the Speak team can take documents and cash into safe-keeping in the Speak Bank. Students may want a small amount for excursion souvenirs — around €70 for the week is reasonable.
Getting to camp
How do we get to Valbonella?
Families can drive directly to the camp. Alternatively, students can join the private coach transfer from Bologna (Hotel Amadeus, Borgo Panigale) or from Bari Centrale. See the Getting to camp page for full details.
What about unaccompanied minors flying?
Speak can accommodate students arriving at Bologna airport as unaccompanied minors. Contact us at teens@speakinitaly.com well in advance of the travel date to arrange the paperwork.
What happens on the last day, and can Speak help with travel?
Students have breakfast at camp before returning to their departure point. Parents can collect them directly at Valbonella, or students can return to Bologna on the Speak coach. Speak sends a full Welcome Pack with all arrival and departure information. Write to teens@speakinitaly.com for travel advice.
