The camp
What is Speak Teens?
Speak Teens is a residential English immersion summer camp in Italy for teenagers aged 10 to 17. Students spend 8 days and 7 nights at Centro Turistico Valbonella, in the Casentino Forest National Park in Emilia-Romagna, alongside native-speaking Teen Anglos from the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada and Australia. The programme combines outdoor TEFL lessons, daily One-to-One sessions, group activities, sport, excursions and evening events — all in an environment designed to make English feel natural rather than like a lesson.
What ages is the camp for?
Students aged 10 to 17. Teen Anglos are aged 13 to 17. Groups are organised by age and level, so younger and older students have appropriate companions and the right lesson group throughout the week.
Who are the other students?
Speak Teens students come mainly from Italy and other European countries. They are teenagers who want to improve their English communication skills and live a genuinely international camp experience — not just a language course. Many come back the following year.
What level of English do students need?
All levels are welcome. The programme focuses on speaking and listening in real situations rather than formal grammar, so even students who feel less confident quickly find their feet. Before camp, every student takes a short online Language Assessment — around 20 to 30 minutes, no preparation needed — so we can place them in the right lesson group from day one.
How does Speak Teens actually improve English?
By making English the language of everyday life rather than something studied in a classroom. Students eat, play, go on excursions and spend their evenings with native speakers. The One-to-One sessions, outdoor TEFL lessons and group activities all reinforce each other. Most students and parents notice a real shift in confidence and spontaneity within the first few days — and the change tends to stick after camp ends.
Is it better to go abroad to learn English?
Going abroad can be great, but many language summer schools in English-speaking countries still follow a traditional classroom format with limited real interaction with native speakers. At Speak Teens, students speak English from the moment they wake up to when they go to bed — in a stunning Italian setting, with a 1:1 ratio of students to native speakers that most schools abroad simply cannot match.
How long has Speak Teens been running?
Since 2018. Speak Srl is based in Molfetta (Puglia) and has been running English immersion programmes in Italy since its founding. The camp takes place at the same venue — Centro Turistico Valbonella — each year.
The Teen Anglos
Who are the Teen Anglos?
Teen Anglos are carefully selected native English-speaking teenagers aged 13 to 17 from the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada and Australia. They are sociable, enthusiastic and genuinely invested in making the week great for everyone.
What is the 1:1 ratio?
The 1:1 ratio means one native English speaker for every student — combining Teen Anglos and Speak staff. On top of that, the Speak staff-to-student ratio is 1:6 for welfare and organisation.
Does my child have the same Anglo for the whole week?
No — and that is intentional. In One-to-One sessions, the Anglo rotates each day, so every student hears a different accent and connects with a new personality. During activities and meals, students mix freely with the whole group of Anglos. By the end of the week, most students have made genuine friendships with several of them.
What is a One-to-One session?
A dedicated daily session between one student and one Teen Anglo — just the two of them, with no audience and no pressure. Sessions involve conversation, games and storytelling rather than formal exercises. The Anglo changes each day.

What is included in the price?
Full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner in the camp restaurant), accommodation with bedding and towels provided, the complete educational and activity programme, 24-hour welfare support and staff supervision, and the online Language Assessment before camp. The optional Cambridge English Skills Test at the end of camp and the transfer service are priced separately.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes — through HeyLight you can spread the cost across 3 to 6 interest-free monthly instalments. See the HeyLight page for details.
Can my child attend both camps?
Absolutely — we would love to have them for both weeks. We also offer a Multiple Booking discount for families booking more than one place. Contact us at teens@speakinitaly.com for details.
How can my child certify their progress?
Every student receives a Speak Teens certificate of participation and a Record of Work at the end of camp. Students aged 12 and over can also take the optional Cambridge English Skills Test on the final day.
Welfare and daily life
Can my child keep their phone?
Phones are kept in the camp office during the day and returned every evening between 18:45 and 19:45 — enough time to call home and catch up. An emergency camp phone is available to families 24 hours a day. Most students adapt very quickly and genuinely enjoy the freedom from their screens.
Who supervises the students?
A full Speak team: the Summer Camp Director, the Learning Director, the Social Programme Coordinator, Welfare Coordinators (one female, one male, dedicated 24/7), qualified native-speaking TEFL teachers, and Camp Leaders. Staff sleep in the same corridors as students.
What are the rooms like, and what should my child bring?
Rooms have 4 to 6 beds with en-suite bathrooms, divided by age and gender. Bedding and towels are provided. For clothing: light practical clothes, a warm layer for evenings, sturdy shoes for trekking, swimwear and sunscreen. Musical instruments welcome. Avoid valuables. A full kit list is sent after booking.
What about dietary requirements or medicines?
Let us know at booking and we will coordinate with the venue. The kitchen is happy to prepare alternatives for food allergies or intolerances. If your child takes regular medication, bring enough for the full duration and our team will manage it.
What happens if my child feels unwell?
A first-aid trained staff member is always on site. The venue has agreements with local GPs and the nearest hospital. Families are contacted immediately. All students are covered by Speak's civil liability and accident insurance (Unipol Sai). Students travelling from outside Italy are advised to take out their own travel and health insurance.
Can my child bring spending money, and are valuables kept safe?
At check-in, the Speak team can take documents and cash into safe-keeping in the Speak Bank. Students may want a small amount for excursion souvenirs — around €70 for the week is reasonable.
Getting to camp
How do students get to Valbonella?
Families can drive directly to camp. Alternatively, students can join the private coach transfer from Bologna (Hotel Amadeus, Borgo Panigale) or Bari (Bari Centrale). See the Getting to camp page for full details.
What about unaccompanied minors travelling by plane?
Speak can receive students arriving at Bologna Airport as unaccompanied minors. Contact us at teens@speakinitaly.com well before your travel date to arrange the paperwork.
What happens on the last day, and can Speak help with travel arrangements?
Students have breakfast at camp before returning to their departure point. Parents can collect directly from Valbonella, or students can return to Bologna on the Speak coach. Speak sends a full Welcome Pack with all arrival and departure information. Write to teens@speakinitaly.com for travel advice.
