Section 1: About Speak

[fa icon="plus-square"] What is Speak?

Speak is a company offering residential English language immersion programmes in Italy.

We bring together native English speakers from around the world to immerse Italian learners in an environment of authentic English conversation. Our programmes develop the language skills of speaking and listening at the same time as supporting Learners with targeted workshops and language sessions lead by our team of qualified English teachers.

[fa icon="plus-square"] How is the day structured?

For Learners, the opportunities to practice and improve their English spans the whole day. Morning sessions play a key role in attending to their English language needs. During this session, we offer Learners both teacher-led lessons and the opportunity for one-to-one conversations with Anglos.

Morning sessions take place in outdoor classrooms with a curriculum that focuses on speaking and listening skills and reflects the natural environment in which our camps takes place. Afternoons and evenings are dedicated to group activites, sports and social time.

So, English learning continues throughout the day - whether it’s a team challenge, event, sports, excursion or mealtime – we’re always ensuring that with our Anglos and Teaching staff, that Learners have every opportunity to speak and practice their English.

[fa icon="plus-square"] Who are the Italian participants?

Learners at the Speak Summer Campus 2022 are young people (18-30 years of age) in their first and second year of studying mechatronics at a technical college in Bari, southern Italy.

Our Italian Learners are coming to Speak specifically to improve their competence in speaking and listening through natural conversations with native English speakers and help them develop their skills for their future careers.

[fa icon="plus-square"] Who are the Anglos at the Speak Summer Campus?

Anglos are mother-tongue English speakers from around the world. Anglos come to Speak in order to help Italian leaners improve their English through simply engaging them in conversation while experiencing a taste of Italy and meeting new people.

At the Speak Summer Campus, Anglos will be between 18-30 years of age offering diverse experiences and world-views.

This year, many Anglos will be from technical backgrounds and study programmes but we welcome applications from Anglos of all backgrounds!

[fa icon="plus-square"] Are there lessons or teachers?

Yes. The Speak Campus offers a combination of natural conversation sessions, workshops, activities and challenges with our Anglos, together with a dynamic academic programme developed by the Speak teaching team in order to develop the language skills of Learners.

[fa icon="plus-square"] Shouldn’t students go abroad to improve their English?

Going abroad to study in an English school, aside from the practical inconvenience involved, doesn’t necessarily reap the desired results. Studying in a language school in an English-speaking country often provides the same classroom-based study that learners can experience at home, with opportunities to actually practice the language just as limited. Excluding some minimal conversation at the airport or at the bar to order a coffee, the opportunities to improve fluency and engage in natural conversation are limited to chatting with fellow-students often faced with the same difficulties.

[fa icon="plus-square"] Is there a minimum age to be considered for the Anglo role?

The minimum age for applications from Anglos at the Speak Summer Campus is 18 years of age.

[fa icon="plus-square"] How many participants are there on the Speak Programme?

There will be a total of around 80 participants on the Summer Campus this year including Learners, Anglos and Speak staff.

[fa icon="plus-square"] What are the accommodation arrangements?

Anglos are accommodated in multiple rooms (3 or 4) at the Hotel Rifugio Sores or the annex (Rifugio Predaia) a short distance from the main location. Free shuttle transfers will be provided by Speak.

Both locations offer quality 3* accommodation and all rooms are en-suite. All rooms also offer:

  • Towels and bedding
  • Complimentary toiletries
  • Haidryers

A free laundry service is available halfway through the Campus for light items.

Section 2: How to apply

[fa icon="plus-square"] What is the Anglo application process?

Anglo Selection

We’d like to share more information about how we offer dates to our applicants to join us as an Anglo at Speak. We are passionate about bringing together a diverse group of people who can add to the dynamic learning environment of each Programme. Therefore, it is important that the team at Speak find a wide range of individuals from the applications we receive in terms of gender, nationality, accent and background in order to get a suitable mix of Anglos for each Campus.

Step 1: Online Application

First of all, please fill in the Online Application form carefully, telling us all about yourself. It’s important you complete the form as fully as possible to give yourself the best chance of being accepted. Once we have received your completed application, we will be in contact with you via email to acknowledge your application. Your application will then be entered onto our Anglo Database.

Please note that we are only able to respond to those applications that we are able to carry forward to the next stage in the application process. If your application is carried forward, we will then be in touch if we are able offer you an informal interview with one of our Campus Managers.

Step 2: Anglo Interview

The Anglo Interview will be an opportunity for you to learn more about the Campus and our Learners. We will discuss your application and the Anglo role.

If your interview is successful, we will then check availability to see if we are able to offer you a place at one of the two Campus dates.

Please be aware that while we will try our best to satisfy your choice of Campus, this may not always be possible depending on availability.

Step 3: Programme Invitation and Anglo Agreement

Once we have agreed the Campus dates, we will send you our official Campus Invitation Email which will include a Pre-Arrival Welcome Pack together with our Anglo Agreement for you to sign. Please read the Anglo Agreement carefully before signing.

Step 4: Confirmation Email & Contact Form

When we have received your signed Anglo Agreement, we will send you an official Confirmation Email. The Confirmation Email also includes a link to our online Contact Form for the Campus. You will need to complete the Contact Form with details regarding your travel information, arrival and departure notes and any special dietary requirements you may wish to tell us about. This form can be resubmitted at any time prior to the Campus should your information change.

[fa icon="plus-square"] Do I need a visa to come to Italy?

Anglos must be sure of their legal entitlement to be in Italy for the entire duration of the Campus

Our Anglos come from all over the world and therefore every case is different. While citizens of many countries do not need any kind of visa to enter Italy as a tourist (at least for a period of less than 90 days), Speak advises all Anglo participants to check the procedures required with the relevant authorities in your home country and your ability to meet the requirements necessary in order to enter Italy.

A good starting point is the Italian Foreign Office official website which offers advice to nationals of different countries wishing to enter Italy. Please click on the link below to find out more:

[fa icon="plus-square"] Will I be covered by insurance during the Programme?

You will be covered by Speak’s Public Liability Insurance (Unipol Sai) for the duration of your time at the Programme.

However, we strongly recommend that Anglos take out private travel/baggage/medical insurance.

[fa icon="plus-square"] When should I book my travel tickets?

Please do not purchase your travel tickets or accommodation in your Meeting Point city (Trento) until we have confirmed your participation in the course and sent you our Confirmation email.

Once your participation is confirmed, we will provide you with a Pre-arrival Information Pack including travel tips and suggestions for accommodation. Do not hesitate to contact us at anglos@speakinitaly.com should you require further assistance.
